Wedding Entertainment SOS! Which Is Best: A Band Or A DJ?

Monday, October 17, 2016

You’ve bought your dress, booked the venue and sent out the invites. Now it’s time to turn your attention to throwing the party of the year. Your reception can take as much dedicated planning and organisation as the ceremony itself. There’s a lot to think about, and difficult decisions to make. Many couples struggle to decide whether to go for a band or a DJ. If this conundrum sounds familiar, this article may help you make a decision.

Wedding DJs
Hiring a wedding DJ is a great idea if you’re a fan of music, you like to let your hair down, and you want everyone up on the dance floor. You generally have greater control of the playlist when you have a DJ rather than a band. You can work with the company to put together tracks that you love, and add those that have a special meaning to you. Of course, your DJ will probably throw in some suggestions of your own. But you can shape the general theme of the night.

You may also find that a DJ is less expensive than a band, and they may play for longer. You could also ask your DJ to take requests, which would enable your guests to get involved.

Wedding bands
Wedding bands can be a great success provided that you cater for the crowd. If you’re thinking of getting a band for the night, make sure you know what they’re going to play. Go for a genre of music that you like, but that will aso get everybody else up dancing. If you choose a band that plays songs that nobody knows, you may find that people stay sat down. Many bands have playlists on their websites, and clips and videos you can listen to. It’s always advisable to listen before you book, so you have an idea of what to expect on the night. You’ll often find that bands that only play events like weddings have a setlist of crowd-pleasers that everyone knows. With a band, the evening may not flow quite as smoothly as with a DJ, as there may be an interval. However, you could always fill this with a playlist of your own.

Best of both worlds
If you can’t decide, why not go for the best of both worlds? Start the night with a live set, and then let a DJ take care of the dance floor into the early hours. If you can’t afford both, you could always create your own playlist online. All you’ll need is some speakers or a dock, and you’re good to go.

You want everyone to have a night to remember at your wedding, and for the dance floor to be packed from dusk til dawn. It can be tricky to decide what to go for if you’re deciding between a DJ and a band. Think about the kind of music you love, and your party of guests. What kinds of tunes are going to fill the floor and ensure that everyone leaves with amazing memories? If you’re thinking of booking a DJ, arrange to meet beforehand to discuss possible playlists. If you’re tempted to hire a band, go along and listen to them play at another gig, or watch some clips online.
